Mars G. Everson writes Sci-fi, Fantasy (mainly Epic and Grimdark), and especially likes mixing both. His favorite authors in those realms are Ursula K. Le Guin, Arthur C. Clarke, J.R.R. Tolkien and Brandon Sanderson. He became a writer mainly so he could put his name in the same paragraph as those writers. Mission Accomplished!
He would like to live in a time where technology is indistinguishable from magic. Luckily, reality is turning that way really fast. The bad part: reality is turning that way really fast.
I started writing when I was a kid, and my first written work was a pretty bad rip-off of a space cop "Choose your own adventure" book in comic-book form. As I kept reading and found fantasy and scifi, at some point I deluded myself into thinking I could become a writer too. I owe a lot not only to Tolkien (the only author I keep going back to over and over again because he's such a wellspring of story and language) but also David Eddings, Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman (mostly for their non-Dragonlance works), Louise Cooper, Richard A. Knaak, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Ursula K. LeGuin, Barbara Hambly, Guy Gavriel Kay, Terry Pratchett, and many more. And many of those "forgotten" authors nowadays were just as important as the others, because they spread my imagination in every direction. Thank you, senseis.
I started writing a fantasy epic when I was 15 (even before trying my hand at short stories, because I mostly read long epic novels) and then kept fiddling with it over the years, then I started a thriller inspired by the manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa, but I returned to fantasy for my first NaNoWriMo contest, where I wrote what is now called "The Name of the Shadow", but which started out as a much more generic "The Colony". Then I kept at it and restarted The Long, Epic Thing(tm) almost from scratch, keeping only maps and character names, but giving it a much more adult feel, as I was just coming of age into A Song of Ice and Fire, so my Eddings-inspired epic suddenly turned into a multi-faction, politic-scheming world with a lot more life to it. By the way, I'm still working on that book / trilogy, but since I want it to be my magnum opus, I'm taking my time with it, Tolkien-style.
Meanwhile, I started writing a grimdark tale, the one that would become Thralls of a Tyrant God, and kept going with its sequels and a prequel novella. I now have more books to write than I have time for, and since I can only write stuff I'm really passionate about, I'm not the most prolific guy out there, but you can check out my works in progress and subscribe to my newsletter to get notified of new releases (and get free books!) or any brain farts I may decide to impose on my readers.
I also hang out in the Facebook and Reddit Grimdark groups and r/Fantasy, as well as in other socials you can see above. I love to shoot the shit, so hit me up!
